JFK (1991) as X

View Quote I think it started like that In the wind. Defense contractors, oil bankers. Just conversation. A call is made.
View Quote X: Garrison?
Jim Garrison: Yes.
X: I'm glad you came. Sorry about the precautions.
Jim Garrison: I just hope it was worth my while, Mr...?
X: I could give you a false name, but I won't. Just call me "X".
View Quote The organizing principle of any society, Mr. Garrison, is for war. The authority of the state over its people resides in its war powers. Kennedy wanted to end the Cold War in his second term. He wanted to call off the moon race in favor of cooperation with the Soviets. He signed a treaty to ban nuclear testing. He refused to invade Cuba in 1962. He set out to withdraw from Vietnam. But all that ended on the 22nd of November, 1963. Since 1961, they knew Kennedy was not going to war in Southeast Asia. Like Caesar, he is surrounded by enemies. Something's underway, but it has no face. Yet, everybody in the loop knows.

Matthew: What are they?

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) as Dr. Sid

View Quote Dr. Sid:: I was young once too, you know.
Aki: Doctor, there's a war going on. No one's young anymore.
View Quote Dr. Sid:: Her vital signs are dropping. Aki is slipping away from us. She needs a sympathetic spirit to help hold her in this world, and I can think of no spirit better suited for that task than yours, Captain.
Gray: I don't understand.
Dr. Sid:: You don't have to understand. You just be with her now. You keep her with us.
View Quote Aki: What we need now is some luck.
Dr. Sid:: Luck has nothing to do with it! Faith and hard work, girl. Cause I'll be damned if you're going to die before me!

Klute (1971) as John Klute

View Quote I understand you use narcotics. Maybe I can have a policeman come here and look at your... arms.
View Quote Bree Daniel: What's your bag, Klute? What do you like? Are you a talker? A button freak? Maybe you like to get your chest walked around with high heeled shoes. Or make 'em watch you tinkle. Or maybe you get off wearing women's clothes. Goddamned hypocrite squares!
John Klute: Okay...
Bree Daniels: I hope this doesn't make my cold any worse.
View Quote Bree Daniel: Tell me, Klute. Did we get you a little? Huh? Just a little bit? Us city folk? The sin, the glitter, the wickedness? Huh?
John Klute: Ah - that's so pathetic.
Bree Daniel: **** off!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 (2014) as President Coriolanus Snow

View Quote [After rebels implode a hydroelectric dam knocking out power] Moves and counter moves.
View Quote Citizens, tonight I address all of Panem as one. Since the Dark Days, Panem has had an unprecedented era of peace. It is a peace built upon cooperation. And a respect for law and order. In the past weeks, you have heard of sporadic violence following the actions of a few radicals in the Quarter Quell. Those who choose this destructive path, your actions are based on a misunderstanding of how we have survived. Together. It is a contract. Each district supplies the Capitol. Like blood to a heart. In return, the Capitol provides order and security. To refuse work is to put the entire system in danger. The Capitol is the beating heart of Panem. Nothing can survive without a heart. The criminals that kneel before you use symbols for the purpose of sedition. Which is why all images of The Mockingjay are now forbidden. Possessing them will be considered treason. Punishable by death. Justice shall be served swiftly. Order shall be restored. To those who ignore the warnings of history, prepare to pay the ultimate price.
View Quote President Snow: Egeria! We need to fix these lines. I won't say "rebels." These are senseless acts of defiance. And I won't legitimize them.
Egeria: We'll call them "criminals."
President Snow: Hmm.
Egeria: "Radicals."
President Snow: Hmm. Otherwise we're breaking my oldest rule. Never let them see you bleed. Citizens, tonight I address all of Panem as one.

Animal House (1978) as Jennings

View Quote Larry: [to Jennings, while high] Okay. That means that our whole solar system could be, like one tiny atom in the fingernail of some other giant being. [Jennings nods] This is too much! That means one tiny atom in my fingernail could be--
Jennings: Could be one little tiny universe.
Larry: Could I buy some pot from you?
View Quote Larry: [Handed his first joint] I won't go schizo, will I?
Jennings: It's a distinct possibility.
View Quote Jennings: Now, what can we say of John Milton's Paradise Lost? It's a long poem, written a long time ago, and I'm sure a lot of you have difficulty understanding exactly what Milton was trying to say. Certainly we know that he was trying to describe the struggle between good and evil, right? Okay. The most intriguing character, as we all know from our reading, was...Satan. Now was Milton trying to tell us that being bad was more fun than being good? [no response] OK, don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible. [Bell rings, students rise to leave] But that doesn't relieve you of your responsibility for this material. Now I'm waiting for reports from some of you... Listen, I'm not joking. This is my job!

Kelly's Heroes (1970) as Sergeant "Oddball"

View Quote We see our role as essentially defensive in nature. While our armies are advancing so fast and everyone's knocking themselves out to be heroes, we are holding ourselves in reserve in case the Krauts mount a counteroffensive which threatens Paris... or maybe even New York. Then we can move in and stop them. But for 1.6 million dollars, we could become heroes for three days.
View Quote Kelly: Well, what do you think, Oddball?
Oddball: It's a wasted trip, baby. Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers.
Big Joe: Hey look, you just keep them Tigers busy and we'll take care of the rest.
Oddball: The only way I got to keep them Tigers busy is to let them shoot holes in me!
Lieutenant Kelly: We just want you to keep them interested for a while, that's all.
PFC Moriarty: Oh, man! You guys are crazy! When we was in the bocage country, we was assaulted by them Tigers! You know what I mean by "assaulted"? Well, I mean assaulted!
Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
PFC Moriarty: Crap!
Lieutenant Kelly: All right, so it's a beautiful day. Now, let's get down to cases. The Tiger is an open-country tank. We happen to have these and a small town with narrow streets. And we do have the element of surprise.
Oddball: Look, Kelly, a Tiger has only one weak point. That's its ass. You've got to hit it point blank and you've got to hit it from behind. Now we do not have the element of surprise. They will hear our Detroit motors long before we ever even get inside that town.
Lieutenant Kelly: What if I can show you a way to get into that town so they don't hear you?
Crapgame: Hey, Oddball, this is your hour of glory. And you're chickening out!
Oddball: To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich! Not some nut who takes on three Tigers.
Kelly: Nobody's asking you to be a hero.
Oddball: No? Then you sit up in that turret, baby.
Kelly: No, because you're gonna be up there, baby, and I'll be right outside showing you which way to go.
Oddball: Yeah?
Kelly: Yeah.
Oddball: Crazy... I mean like, so many positive waves... maybe we can't lose, you're on!
View Quote [Kelly, Big Joe and Oddball approach the last Tiger in the open; a turret hatch opens and the Tiger's commander climbs out to meet them.]
Big Joe: Cigarette?
German Tank Commander: No smoke. The fuel system is rotten. We have gasoline all over the place.
Big Joe: S'all right. Hey, look, Max, you and us we're just soldiers, right? We don't even know what this war's all about. All we do is we fight and we die and for what? We don't get anything out of it. Now, in about half an hour, the whole American Army's gonna be coming down that road. So why don't you do yourself a big fat favor, huh? And get the hell outta here?
German Tank Commander: I have orders. This bank isn't to fall into the hands of the American Army.
Lieutenant Kelly: Sergeant, this bank's not gonna fall into the hands of the American Army. It's gonna fall into our hands. You see, we're just a private enterprise operation.
German Tank Commander: You- the American Army.
Oddball: No, baby, we ain't. You know what's inside that bank, man? There's 16 million dollars' worth of gold in that bank, sweetheart.
Big Joe: That's about 65 million Marks.
Kelly: And Sergeant, all you have to do to have an equal share of this money, is to crank this turret around and blow a hole in that door.

The Italian Job (2003) as John

View Quote Left Ear: So come on, gentlemen, shopping list. Who's doing what? Spare no dirty details.
John: Come on, guys. Take a lesson from an old man. Don't spend it. Invest.
Left Ear: In what?
John: In gold.
Left Ear: What are you getting, Rob?
Handsome Rob: Ah, I don't know. There's a lot of things you can get with a lot of money. You know, I'm just thinking about naked girls in leather seats.
Left Ear: Obviously. See?
Handsome Rob: Suppose I'll get the Aston-Martin Vanquish. There's not a lot a girl won't do in the passenger seat of one of those things.
Lyle: I'm gonna get a NAD T-770 digital decoder with a seventy-watt amp and and Burr Brown DAC's.
Left Ear: [at a loss] Yeah...
Lyle: It's a big stereo. Speakers so loud, they blow women's clothes off.
Handsome Rob: Now you're talking!
Left Ear: Thirty-five million dollars, you can't get more creative than that, man? I'm going to Andalusia. The south of Spain. Right over there. [points] Get me a big house, get me a library full of first editions, get a room for my shoes... What about you, Steve?
Steve Bendel: I don't know. I haven't decided yet.
Left Ear: You haven't decided yet? Come on, man. Is it the mountain air? Just —
Steve: I liked what you said. I'll take one of each of yours.
Left Ear: [Laughs] Well here's to two of everything for Steve!
View Quote John Bridger: Charlie, there are two kinds of thieves in this world: the ones who steal to enrich their lives, and the ones who steal to define their lives. Don't be the latter. Makes you miss out on what's really important in this life.
Charlie Croker: What are you talking about, John? You've been a good father.
John: Sending presents doesn't make you a good father. I spent half my kid's life in prison. Don't get to be my age with nothing but this, Charlie. Find somebody you want to spend the rest of your life with and hold onto her forever. Okay?
View Quote [Stella gets an early-morning phone call from her father.]
Stella Bridger: Hello?
John Bridger: Hello, sweetie.
Stella: Daddy...[checks the clock] it's early.
John: I just wanted to let you know that I'm sending you something.
Stella: Mmm. Does it smell nice?
John: No...But it's sparkly.
Stella: [suddenly wide awake] Does it have a receipt?
John: [chuckles] I'm sending it to you from the store.
Stella: Hmm. Why don't you just come by? We'll have some breakfast.
John: It'd be a long trip. [pause] I'm in Venice.
Stella: [sits up in bed] With your parole officer's approval, of course?
John: I like the guy, Stella, you know that. But we never really connected. So I think I've paid my PO his last visit.
Stella: What are you into, Dad? Don't break my heart. You told me you were through.
John: After this, I am through. I swear to you.

The Hunger Games (2012) as President Snow

View Quote Welcome, welcome! Tributes, we welcome you! We salute your courage and your sacrifice. And we wish you Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favour.
View Quote [voiceover] War, terrible war. Widows, orphans, a motherless child. This was the uprising that rocked our land. Thirteen districts rebelled against the country that fed them, loved them, protected them. Brother turned on brother until nothing remained. And then came the peace, hard fought, sorely won. A people rose up from the ashes and a new era was born. But freedom has a cost. When the traitors were defeated, we swore as a nation we would never know this treason again. And so it was decreed, that each year, the various districts of Panem would offer up in tribute, one young man and woman, to fight to the death in a pageant of honor, courage and sacrifice. The lone victor, bathed in riches, would serve as a reminder of our generosity and our forgiveness. This is how we remember our past. This is how we safeguard our future.
View Quote President Snow: Seneca, why do you think we have a winner?
Seneca Crane: What do you mean?
President Snow: I mean, why do we have a winner? I mean, if we just wanted to intimidate the districts, why not round up twenty-four of them at random and execute them all at once? Be a lot faster. [Crane has no response] Hope.
Seneca Crane: Hope?
President Snow: Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained.
Seneca Crane: [confused] So...
President Snow: So, contain it!

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) as President Coriolanus Snow

View Quote Ladies and gentlemen, this is the seventy-fifth year of the Hunger Games. It was written in the charter of the Games that every twenty-five years, there would be a Quarter Quell to keep fresh for each new generation the memory of those who died in the uprising against the Capitol. Each Quarter Quell is distinguished by Games of a special significance. And now, on this the 75th anniversary of our defeat of the Rebellion, we celebrate the third Quarter Quell … As a reminder that even the strongest cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, on this the Third Quarter Quell Games, the male and female tributes are to be reaped from the existing pool of victors in each district … regardless of age, state of health, or situation.
View Quote President Snow: Look at them. She's not who they think she is. She's not a leader. She just wants to save her skin. It's as simple as that.
Plutarch Heavensbee: I think that's true.
President Snow: But she has become a beacon of hope for the rebellion, and she has to be eliminated.
Plutarch Heavensbee: I agree she should die, but in the right way. At the right time. It's moves and counter-moves, that's all we've gotta look at. Katniss Everdeen is a symbol. Their Mockingjay. They think she's one of them. We need to show them that she's one of us. We don't have to destroy her, just the image. Then we let the people do the rest.
President Snow: What do you propose?
Plutarch Heavensbee: Shut down the black markets, take away what little they have, then double the amount of floggings and executions, put them on TV; broadcast them live. Sow fear- more fear.
President Snow: It won't work. Fear does not work as long as they have hope, and Katniss Everdeen is giving them hope.
Plutarch Heavensbee: She's engaged. Make everything about that. What kind of dress she's gonna wear? Floggings. What's the cake gonna look like? Executions. Who's gonna be there? Fear. Blanket coverage, shove it in their faces. Show them that she's one of us now. [laughs] They're gonna hate her so much they just might kill her for you.
President Snow: Brilliant.
View Quote President Snow: [observing a video of Katniss's actions in the Hunger Games] Such bravery. Such spirit. Such... contempt.
Katniss Everdeen: President Snow. What an honor.
President Snow: My dear, I think we can make this so much simpler if we agree not to lie to each other. What do you think?
Katniss Everdeen: Yes, I think that would save time.
President Snow: Sit down, please.
[Katniss sits down in a chair on one side of the desk; President Snow sits down on the other.]
President Snow: I have a problem, Miss Everdeen. A problem that began the moment you revealed those poisoned berries in the arena. If that Head Game-Maker Seneca Crane had had any brains at all, he would have blown you to bits then and there. But here you are. I expect you can guess where he is.
Katniss Everdeen: Yes, I think so.
President Snow: And after that fiasco, there was nothing left to do but let you play out your little scenario. [smiles] And you were very good. That whole love-crazed, besotted schoolgirl routine. Impressive. Truly. You convinced the people in the Capitol. Unfortunately, not everyone in the Districts fell for it. I mean, you can't know this, but in several of them, people viewed your little trick with the berries as an act of defiance, not as an act of love. And if a girl from District 12, of all places, can defy the Capitol and walk away unharmed, what is to prevent them from doing the same? What is to prevent, say, an uprising? That can lead to revolution. And then in a fraction of time, the whole system collapses.
Katniss Everdeen: It must be a fragile system if it can be brought down by just a few berries.
President Snow: Yes, it is indeed. But not in the way you imagine it.
Katniss Everdeen: How should I imagine it?
President Snow: You should imagine thousands upon thousands of your people dead. This town of yours, reduced to ashes. Imagine it gone. Made radioactive. Buried under dirt like it had never existed, like District 13. [pauses, looking at Katniss pointedly] You fought very hard in the Games, Miss Everdeen. But they were games. Would you like to be in a real war?
Katniss Everdeen: No.
President Snow: Good. Neither would I. [picks up a biscuit from the desk] Did your mother make these?
Katniss Everdeen: Peeta.
President Snow: [smiles cruelly] Ah. He's a lovely boy, isn't he? Tell me, at what point did he realize the depth of your...indifference towards him?
Katniss Everdeen: I'm not indifferent.
President Snow: Don't lie! You promised. [Eats biscuit]
Katniss Everdeen: Why don't you just kill me now?
President Snow: ...I don't want to kill you. I want us to be friends. But if not friends, then allies.
Katniss Everdeen: What do I need to do?
President Snow: When you and Peeta are on tour, you need to smile. You need to be grateful. But above all, you need to be madly, prepared-to-end-it-all in love. Do you think you can handle that?
Katniss Everdeen: Yes.
President Snow: "Yes", what?
Katniss Everdeen: I'll convince them.
President Snow: No. Convince me.
[plays video of Katniss and Gale kissing]
Do convince me. For the sake of your loved ones.
