Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018) as Dr. Ava Paige
View Quote
Because things are changing, and not for the better. Infection rates were up 300%. Fortunately, we may be on the verge of a breakthrough. This is Subject A7. He spent over three years in the Maze Trials. The antibodies produced in response have been the strongest we've ever seen. We're extracting a new serum as we speak, and with your support, we'd like to begin human trials.

Dr. Ava Paige: [To Janson] Beautiful, isn't it?
Janson: Yes. It's a lovely city.
Dr. Ava Paige: The walls. It's amazing what people can accomplish when their survival's at stake. Squeeze them hard enough there's nothing they can't do. No line they won't cross.
Janson: You've had a bit of a setback. It's nothing we're not used to.
Dr. Ava Paige: Not this time. The virus is airborne. It's inside the walls. That serum was our last chance. Anyone not already infected will be inside of a month.
Janson: Okay– we can handle this. We just need to evacuate essential personnel, set up at another safe zone further north. We've still got twenty-eight Immunes right here inside this building. We can find more.
Dr. Ava Page: You would. You'd hunt every last one of them down till there was no one left. In spite of everything we've done to them– everything we've put them through– at least we gave them the tools they'll need to survive. Maybe they'll succeed where we failed. [Gets up]
Janson: Are you really telling me that you're giving up? After everything?
Dr. Ava Paige: It's not about giving up, Janson. It's about knowing when you've lost.
[Paige walks away, with Janson watching on.]

Olive: Oh happy day mama! Oh, I thought I was gonna have to spend my dowry on booze and pills to numb the loneliness!! A gentleman caller, hooray!!!

Olive: Guys, I want you to know that if you hear I have chlamydia, that is totally false.
Rosemary: Olive, do we need to have the talk again?
Olive: No. It's just a thing that's going around.
Dill: You know, nothing you're saying is making me feel any better.
Rosemary: Not to mention how you have been dressing these past few days. No judgment, but you kind of look like a stripper.
Olive: Mom!
Dill: A high-end stripper, for governors or athletes, but a stripper nonetheless.

Rosemary: That boy from yesterday just dropped this off for you...
Olive: Well, put it in the pile of gifts from my other suitors.
Rosemary: He seems like a nice kid. He seemed a little incredibly gay...
Olive: Dyed in the wool homosexual, that boy is.
Rosemary: I just want you to know your father and I are totally supportive. We love you no matter what the sexual orientation of your opposite sex sex partner...
Olive: We are not dating, Mom.
Rosemary: ...and don't worry about not making us grandparents. Although we were kind of hoping you'd get "knocked up" so we'd have a second shot at raising kids, really do it right this time.
Olive: Bye now...
Rosemary: You know, I dated a homosexual once. For a long time, actually... a long time...
Olive: Dear God, dear Lord, tell me you didn't marry and have children with him!
Rosemary: [Giggles] No.
[Olive sarcastically imitates laughing]
Rosemary: No, no. Your father is as straight as they come. A little too straight, if you know what I mean, girlfriend.

Lars: Oh, she's wonderful. Gus and I are very lucky with women - she's wonderful. But she...
Dagmar: That's okay, let's find you something to read.
Lars: No, it's just... between us?
Dagmar: Of course.
Lars: I'm worried about her. I think she has a little problem.
Dagmar: Oh, well, maybe you shouldn't tell me.
Lars: No, that's okay. It's just, and I think it's because she's insecure, it's just, she's just always trying to hug everybody. You know, some people don't like that. Some people don't like to be hugged. But she doesn't realize that. She takes it personally, and, it hurts her feelings. I don't know what to do about that. Do you?
Dagmar: It's such a comfort sometimes, just to have somebody's arms around you. Don't you think?
Lars: No.
Dagmar: It feels good.
Lars: It does not feel good. It, it hurts.
Dagmar: Oh, like a cut, or bruise?
Lars: Like a burn. Like when you go outside and your feet freeze and you come back in and then they thaw out? It's like that. It's almost exactly like that.
Dagmar: Same with everyone?
Lars: Uh, not really with Bianca. But everyone else.

Dagmar: Have there been any changes in the family in the last year or so?
Gus: [while Karin simultaneously nods "Yes"] No, everything is pretty much exactly the same except Karin is pregnant and Lars is nuts.
Dagmar: You know, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. What we call mental illness isn't always just an illness. It can be a communication; it can be a way to work something out.
Gus: Fantastic. When will it be over?
Dagmar: When he doesn't need it anymore.
Karin: How can we help?

2081 (2009) as Narrator
View Quote
The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law, you see. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. And all this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of the United States Handicapper General. The strong wore weights to make them weaker. The intelligent wore earpieces that kept them from taking unfair advantage of their brains. Even the beautiful sometimes wore masks in situations where their beauty might simply be…too distracting. It was the Golden Age of Equality.

Compare this to Vonnegut story's first paragraph, which reads,
The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.

She's right. This is all just a means to an end. You used to understand that, Thomas. No matter what you think of me, I am not a monster. I'm a doctor. I swore an oath to find a cure! No matter the cost. I just need more time.

Janson: Thomas, thank you for seeing me. Sorry for the inconvenience; I was just hoping we could have a few moments to chat in private, away from the others. Well, I won't take up too much of your time. I may only have one question. What do you remember about WCKD? You're not in any trouble; we're just having a conversation. I'm just trying to understand.
Thomas: Understand what?
Janson: Whose side are you on?
Thomas: I remember I used to work for WCKD. I remember that they sent me into the Maze. I remember watching my friends die in front of me. I'm on their side.
Janson: Interesting. You say you worked for WCKD, but they sent you into the Maze. Why would they do that?
Thomas: I don't know. Maybe you should've asked 'em before you killed 'em all!
Janson: Good evening, Dr. Paige. Lovely to see you again. Although, I admit, I-I wasn't expecting to hear from you quite so soon.
Dr. Ava Paige: Change in plans, Janson. I'll be arriving a little sooner than expected; first thing tomorrow.
Janson: Oh, we'll be delighted to have you. I think you'll be pleased with the progress we've made. As you can see, early results have been extremely promising. Whatever it is you've been doing to them in there, it's working.
Dr. Ava Paige: Not well enough. I've just received Board approval. I want all of the remaining subjects sedated and prepped for harvest by the time I arrive.
Janson: Dr. Paige, we're going as fast as we can. We are still running tests–
Dr. Ava Paige: Try something faster. Until I can guarantee their security, this is the best plan.
Janson: Ma'am, security is my job; we're on 24-hour lockdown here. I can assure you, the assets are secure.
Dr. Ava Paige: Have you found the Right Arm?
Janson: Not yet. We've tracked them as far as the mountains–
Dr. Ava Paige: So they're still out there. And they've already hit two of our installations. They want these kids as badly as we do. And I cannot– I cannot afford another loss. Not now, when I'm so close to a cure. If you are not up to the task, I will find someone who is.
Janson: That won't be necessary. May I suggest we start with the most recent arrivals–
Dr. Ava Paige: Just get it done. [Janson starts to leave] Janson. I don't want them to feel any pain.
Janson: They won't feel a thing.
Thomas: Open this door, Janson!
Janson: You really don't want me to.
Thomas: OPEN THIS DAMN DOOR!
Janson: Listen to me! I'm trying to save your life! The Maze was one thing, but you kids wouldn't last one day out in the Scorch. If the elements don't kill you, the Cranks will. Thomas, you have to believe me. I only want what's best for you.
Thomas: Yeah, lemme guess– WCKD is good?
Newt: I wish Alby could've seen all this.
Thomas: And Winston. And Chuck.
Newt: He'd be proud of you, you know, Tommy.

Well, I think it's safe to say the Maze Trials were a complete success. I wasn't expecting so many survivors, but the more the merrier. Thomas continues to surprise and impress. And for now, they seem to have taken the bait. It's too soon to say, but they could be the key to everything. So let's move forward. It's time now to begin Phase Two.

[In a recorded video] Hello. I'm Dr. Ava Paige. I'm Director of Operations at the World Catastrophe Killzone Department. If you're watching this, that means you've successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you, but circumstances seem to have prevented it. I'm sure by now you must all be very confused. angry. frightened. I can only assure you that everything that's happened to you, everything we've done to you, it was all done for a reason. You won't remember, but the sun has scorched our world. Billions of lives lost to fire, famine. Suffering on a global scale. The fallout was unimaginable. What came after was worse. We called it the Flare. A deadly virus that attacks the brain. It is violent, unpredictable, incurable, or so we thought. In time a new generation emerged that could survive the virus, suddenly, there was a reason to hope for a cure. But finding it would not be easy. The young would have to be tested, even sacrificed, inside harsh environments where their brain activity could be studied. All in an effort to understand what makes them different. What makes you different. You may not realize it, but you're very important. Unfortunately, your trials have only just begun. [Sparks shower from a door across the room behind Paige. Ragtag soldiers dressed mostly in black break in and start gunning down the white-coated lab personnel as she speaks] As you'll no doubt soon discover, not everyone agrees with our methods. Progress is slow, people are scared. It may be too late for us, for me. But not for you. The outside world awaits. [The armed intruders are firing at the glass panels separating Paige from the rest of the lab: Paige raises a revolver to her temple.] Remember: WCKD is good.
