[On their way to the airport]

So guys, where do you think they're taking us?
Sassy : I don't know about us, but I know where they're taking you.

Well, I don't know this much, I mean it wouldn't be any place bad, or they would've given us those dumb tranquilizers.

Bob

Hey Peter? Did you give the animals the tranquilizers?

Chance, Shadow and Sassy

Uh-oh!

[Later]

We're doomed!

Shadow

Calm down, nobody's doomed.

Oh yeah? Well, let ask you something old timer, why did they shove those little green kibbles down our throats? If you're smart like me, you can get rid of it.

Get rid of it? How?

Easy. You just work on a nice-sized hairball, and then you think of something...disgusting...like a big [Gags]...fluffy...cat! [Vomits up what's left of a ball and belches]

[Disgusted]

How pleasant.

Hey, I've been looking for that ball.

[Later] [singing]

99 cans of dog food on the wall, 99 cans of dog fooooood - everybody!

Chance, Shadow and Sassy
[singing]

If one of those cans should happen to fall, 98 cans of dog/cat food on the wall.

Cats only!

Oh, I hate this song!

Shadow, that plane left without us. And Hope was on it.

Shadow

So was Peter.

So now what are we gonna do?

Shadow

Let me think... They probably don't even know we're gone.

[looking at Chance]

And guess whose fault it is.

Oh, so this is my fault? I just saved us from the Bad Place!

No, you just got us lost AGAIN!

Shadow

Like it or not, you two, we're gonna have to find our way back home.

Home? You remember what happened before? Huge mountains, stinky skunks, porcupines - not me, pops!

[In an alleyway, Shadow drags a cardboard box along]

Why are you dragging that? I didn't hear anybody shout "fetch".

Shadow

Say hello to your home away from home, Sass.

That?! It's filthy! My litter box is cleaner! And I don't have anything to sleep in.

Shadow

What, no cat's pajamas?

Oh, you're a riot, Shadow.

Canines, the feline's still hungry!

Shadow

We're all still hungry, Sassy.

Better get used to it, babe. This is the city. Only the strong survive.

Well, then you're a goner.

Shadow
[After Riley's gang save Shadow and Sassy from Ashcan and Pete] [to Riley]

That was some nice fighting, stranger.

Ashcan

This ain't over yet, goldie! Watch your back!

Pete

Yeah, your back!

I hope you're not making threats, Trashcan.

Spike

Unless you wanna wake up at the vet!

Sledge

With a thermometer under your tail!

[barking]

Now beat it!

[Arriving at Riley's abandoned warehouse]

Well, this is it. Home sweet home. Hey, it's nothing fancy, but the price is right, and nobody bothers us. So you guys can stay as long as you like.

Shadow

Thanks, Riley. You're very kind.

Right, if he's so kind, why doesn't he help us find that bridge?

Shadow

We can't leave until we find Chance.

Why not?

Shadow

You know you miss him.

Okay, I miss his stupid jokes, and his stupid face, and his stupid... stupid-ness!

Shadow

Oh, Sassy, stop it.

And I'm "stupidly" starting to worry about him!

Ralph

What's going on? [sees Riley's Gang, Shadow and Sassy] You'd almost think they're trying to... trying to stop us here.

Jack

Heh. I'd like to see 'em try. [looking through binoculars]

Shadow

Okay, get ready, Sassy.

Shadow, I was born ready.

Jack

Run 'em over.

Ralph

Jack, that's about another $100 worth of dog out there--

Jack

Don't you understand what's happening here, Ralph? They're turning against us!

Ralph

What?

Jack

We gotta show 'em who's boss. We gotta run 'em down like the dogs they are!

Ralph

Jack, I ca... I can't do that.

Jack
[takes the cigarette and blows]

Show 'em, Ralph! Show 'em who's boss! [Jack and Ralph fight for control of "The Blood Red Van"]

Bob
[At the very same time that Chance is chowing down, the Seavers are landing in Maine. As they get off the plane and enter the airport, Mr. Seaver hears his name over the public-address system]

Bob Seaver. Mr. Bob Seaver. Please report to the information desk.

Bob
[Mr. Seaver dashes across the airport at top speed to the information desk. He can barely believe his ears until the airline agent warns him that his animals have escaped. How is he going to explain this to the children?]

There's been a problem.

Peter

Is this Shadow? Dad, what's going on?

Bob

They warn me the animals got loose somewhere...at the airport.

Laura
[Mrs. Seaver looks out the window. It is pouring rain]

They're outside? In this weather!

Bob
[Mr. Seaver takes a deep breath and shakes his head, no]

Not here. In San Francisco.

Hope
[Peter and Hope are shocked. Hope begins to weep]

How could we let this happen to them again?

Laura
[Mr. Seaver wraps her arm around her daughter's shoulders]

It was an incident, Hope. If the animals could survive a mountain wilderness, they can survive San Francisco, as well.

Peter

We have to go back!

Bob
[Mr. Seaver shakes his head, no]

There's no sense all of us ruining our vacation. I'll fly home first fashion in the morning.

Peter

No, Dad! We have to stick together, best times or worse. We should all go back!

Laura
[Jamie smirks. They are going back––he'll be home to play in the next two baseball games] [Mrs. Seaver looks sternly at her son]

Jamie, you're not happy the animals are lost, are you?

Jamie

Mum, if we win these next two games, we make the play-off. The team needs me!

Laura

Darling, Chance could be in very serious danger. He's your dog! And your very best friend.

Shadow
[Jamie feels a little guilty. He also yet feels happy about the idea of playing in the big games. He is all mixed up. Tears well in his eyes. He turns and runs off from his mother] [Meanwhile, back in San Francisco, the animals are settling in for the night]

This looks well.

But it's so filthy!

Nice and filthy. [He is happy. He stands on his two hind legs and tips over a garbage can. The putrid odor of rotten food fills the air] You can't find decent trash like this in the burbs!

Shadow
[Shadow uses his teeth to drag an empty cardboard box across the alley]

This ought to keep us warm and dry for the night. [Sassy crawls in and makes herself as comfortable as possible. Shadow follows her]

[Chance stands tall and steps off from the box]

Uh-uh. Not for me. I want to soak up this atmosphere.

[Suddenly, there comes a smash. Then another. A tall, shadowy man wanders into the alley and lights a match right in Chance's face. That is a little too much atmosphere. The dog scrambles into the box]

Well, look who's back. And just as I thought, it was safe to breathe again!

[Chance tries to ignore her. He lays down, puts his paws over his ears and goes to sleep] [All is peaceful––––for a while. Then suddenly, the animals awaken to a loud, metallic smashing sound. Chance looks up and stares into the face of a monster––a monster with huge glowing eyes and a mouth filled with broom bristles instead of teeth]

Anybody know what this nonsense is? [Shadow and Sassy are silent with fear. Cowering before what is actually a street-sweeping truck, the animals know only that they have to escape its crunching metal jaws––fast]
[The giant monster races closer and closer. Any second now, it is certain to gobble them up]
