S Snape
[Snape has caught Harry in a hallway.]
Potter. What are you doing wandering the corridors at night?
S Snape
How extraordinarily like your father, you are, Potter. Wandering the corridors at night, strutting about the castle.
My dad didn't strut. And nor do I. Now, I would appreciate it if you would lower your wand.
S Snape
[Lowers his wand]
Turn out your pockets. Turn out your pockets. [Harry shows him the Marauder's Map] What's this?
S Snape
[Harry opens the map] [Puts his wand on the map]
Reveal your secrets. [To Harry] Read it.
"Messrs. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs offer their compliments to Professor Snape and..."
"... and request that he keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business."
S Snape
Why you insolent, little--
Lupin Professor.
S Snape
Well, well. Lupin. Out for a little walk in the moonlight, are we?
Ron, the dog, where is it?
Harry, he's the dog! He's an animagus!
[Sirius appears behind a door]
If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us, too!
No. Only one will die tonight.
[Harry wrestles Black onto the floor and holds him at wandpoint] [Laughing]
Are you going to kill me, Harry?
Lupin Expelliarmus! [Harry's wand flies out of his hand and he goes over to Ron and Hermione] Well, well, Sirius. Looking rather ragged, aren't we? Finally, the flesh reflects the madness within.
Well, you'd know all about the madness within, wouldn't you, Remus?
[Lupin helps Sirius up off the floor]
Lupin I know.
Lupin I understand.
No! I trusted you. And all this time, you've been his friend. He's a werewolf! That's why he's been missing classes.
Lupin How long have you known?
Since Professor Snape set the essay.
Lupin Well, well, Hermione, you really are the brightest witch of your age I've ever met.
Enough talk, Remus! Come on, let's kill him!
Lupin Wait!
I DID MY WAITING!! TWELVE YEARS OF IT! IN AZKABAN!!!
Lupin [Hands him his wand]
Very well. Kill him. But wait one more minute. Harry has the right to know why.
I know why. You betrayed my parents. You're the reason they're dead!
Lupin No, Harry. Someone did betray your parents but it was somebody who, until quite recently, "I believed to be dead."
Peter Pettigrew! And he's in this room, right now!
Come out, come out Peter! Come out, come out and play!
S Snape
[Enters]
Expelliarmus! [Disarms Black] Vengeance is sweet. I'd hoped I'd be the one to catch you.
Lupin Severus--
S Snape
[Directs his wand at Lupin]
I told Dumbledore you were helping an old friend into the castle and now... here's the proof.
Brilliant, Snape. Once again, you've put your keen and penetrating mind to the task and, as usual, come to the wrong conclusion. Now, if you'll excuse us, Remus and I have some unfinished business to attend to!
S Snape
[Puts his wand to Black's neck]
Give me a reason! I beg you!
Lupin Severus, don't be a fool.
He can't help it.It's habit by now.
Lupin Sirius, be quiet.
Be quiet yourself, Remus!
S Snape
Listen to you two, quarrelling like an old married couple.
Why don't you run along and play with your chemistry set!?
S Snape
[Forces his wand into Black's neck]
I could do it, you know. But why deny the Dementors? They're so longing to see you. Do I detect a flicker of fear? Oh, yes. A Dementor's Kiss. One could only imagine what that must be like to endure. It's said to be nearly unbearable to witness but I'll do my best!
Lupin Severus, please.
[Harry points Hermione's wand at Sirius, then at Snape]
Expelliarmus! [Blasts Snape into a bed, unconscious]
Harry, what did you just do?
Tell me about Peter Pettigrew!
Lupin He was at school with us. We thought he was our friend.
No. Pettigrew's dead. [Points the wand at Sirius] You killed him!
Lupin [Stands in front of Sirius]
No he didn't! I thought so, too, until you mentioned seeing Pettigrew's name on the map.
The map never lies. Pettigrew's alive. And he's right there! [Points at Ron]
Scabbers has been in our family for--
Twelve years! Curiously long life for a common garden rat!? He's missing a toe, isn't he?
All they could find of Pettigrew was his--
Finger! The dirty coward cut it off so that everyone would think he was dead! And then he transformed into a rat!
Show me. [Sirius attempt take Scabbers from Ron] Give it to him, Ron.
No! What are you trying to do to him? [Sirius takes Scabbers] Scabbers! Leave him alone!
[Sirius and Lupin just barely manage to make the rat transform into Peter Pettigrew]
PP Peter Pettigrew
Remus? Sirius. My old friends! [Attempts to escape] Harry, look at you. You look so much like your father, like James. We were the best of friends--
How dare you speak to Harry! [Chases him behind a piano] How dare you talk about James in front of him!
Lupin You sold James and Lily to Voldemort, didn't you?!
PP Peter Pettigrew
I didn't mean to! The Dark Lord, you have no idea the weapons he possesses. Ask yourself, Sirius. What would you have done? What would you have done?
I WOULD'VE DIED!!! I would've died rather than betray my friends!!
PP Peter Pettigrew
[Harry blocks the door as Pettigrew attempts to escape]
Harry, James wouldn't have wanted me killed. Your father-he would've spared me. He would've shown me mercy!
[Sirius and Lupin grab Pettigrew and prepare to kill him]
You should've realized, Peter, that if the Dark Lord didn't kill you, then we would. Together!
Lupin Harry, this man is...
I know what he is. But we'll take him up to the castle.
PP Peter Pettigrew
Bless, you boy! Bless you!
Get off. I said we'd take you up to the castle. After that, the Dementors can have you.
PS Professor Snape
[Professor Snape has caught Harry in a hallway during the night]
Potter. What are you doing wandering the corridors at night?
PS Professor Snape
How extraordinarily like your father, you are, Potter. He too was exceedingly arrogant, strutting about the castle as if he owned the place.
[irritated]
My dad didn't strut. And nor do I. Now if you don't mind, professor, I would appreciate it if you would lower your wand.
PS Professor Snape
[Lowers his wand]
Turn out your pockets. [Harry just stands there] [sternly] Turn out your pockets. [Harry takes out the Marauder's Map] What's this?
PS Professor Snape
Really? Open it. [Harry opens the map; Snape puts his wand on the map] Reveal your secrets. [To Harry] Read it.
"Messrs. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs... offer their compliments to Professor Snape and..."
PS Professor Snape
Go on.
[amused]
"...and request that he keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business."
PS Professor Snape
Why you insolent, little—!
Professor Lupin Professor.
PS Professor Snape
Well, well. Lupin. Out for a little walk in the moonlight, are we?
Professor Lupin [to Harry]
Harry, are you all right?
PS Professor Snape
That remains to be seen. [takes the Marauder's Map] I have just now confiscated a rather curious artifact from Mr. Potter. Take a look, Lupin. Supposed to be your area of expertise. Clearly, it's full of Dark Magic.
Professor Lupin I seriously doubt it, Severus. It looks to me as though it's merely a parchment designed to insult anyone who tries to read it. [chuckles] I suspect it's a Zonko product. Nevertheless, I shall investigate any hidden qualities it may possess. It is, after all, as you say, my area of expertise. [to Harry] Harry, would you come with me, please. [to Professor Snape] Professor, good night.
PO Portrait on the Wall
[irritated, to Professor Snape]
Are you daft? Put that light out!
[to Professor Lupin before returning to his dormitory, explaining about to the Marauder's Map]
Professor, just so you know, I don't think that map always works. Earlier, it showed someone (wondering) in the castle. Someone I know to be dead.
Professor Lupin Oh, really? And who might that be?
Professor Lupin That's not possible.
It's just what I saw. Goodnight, professor.
[gazing at Hogwarts and talking with Harry]
It's beautiful, isn't it? I'll never forget the first time I walked through those doors. It'll be nice to do it again as a free man. That was a noble thing you did back there. He doesn't deserve it.
Well, I just didn't think my dad would've wanted his two best friends to become killers. Besides, dead the truth dies with him. Alive, you're free.
P Pettigrew
[appearing with Professor Lupin pointing his wand at him]
Turn me into a maggot! Turn me into a flobberworm! Anything but the dementors! Ron! Haven't I been a good friend? A good pet? You won't let them give me to the Dementors, will you? I was your rat! Sweet girl! Clever girl!
Professor Lupin Get away from her!
I don't know if you know, Harry. But when you were born, James and Lily made me your godfather.
Well, I can understand if you choose to stay with your aunt and uncle. But if you ever wanted a different home…
What? Come and live with you?
It's just a thought. I can understand if you don't want to.
HARRY! [Harry and Sirius turn around; points to a full moon rising from behind the mountains]
Remus, my old friend. Have you taken your potion tonight? You know the man you truly are, Remus! This heart is where you truly live! This heart here! This flesh is only flesh!
Professor Lupin [Another bluebird flies into the Whomping Willow and gets thwacked. Inside the castle, Harry is walking up to Lupin's office. He's about to knock on the door.]
Hello, Harry. [he gestures to the Marauder's Map, which is open on his desk] I saw you coming.
Professor Lupin [Lupin has been injured from the events of the previous night and is clearly in the middle of packing]
I've looked worse, believe me.
Professor Lupin No. No, I resigned, actually.
Professor Lupin Well, it seems that somebody let slip the nature of my condition. This time tomorrow, the owls will start arriving, and parents will not want a, uh... well, someone like me teaching their children.
Professor Lupin Dumbledore has already risked enough on my behalf. Besides, people like me are... well, let's just say that I'm used to it by now. [he waves his wand, and his trunk packs itself] Why do you look so miserable, Harry?
None of it made any difference. Pettigrew escaped.
Professor Lupin Didn't make any difference? Harry, it made all the difference in the world! You helped uncover the truth. You saved an innocent man from a terrible fate. It made a great deal of difference! If I am proud of anything, it is of how much you have learned this year. Now, since I am no longer your teacher, I feel no guilt whatsoever about giving this back to you. [gestures to the Map] So now I'll say goodbye, Harry. I feel sure we'll meet again sometime. Until then... mischief managed. [the Map closes up and turns blank]
[Harry watches sadly as Lupin walks out the door.]
