Hugo

Hey, Quasi, what's going on out there? A fight? A flogging?

Victor

A festival.

Hugo

You mean the Feast of Fools?

Quasimodo

Uh-huh.

Hugo

All right, all right! Pour the wine and cut the cheese.

Victor

It is a treat to watch the colorful pageantry of the simple peasant folk.

Hugo

Boy, nothin' like balcony seats for watching the ol' F.O.F.

Quasimodo

Yeah, watching. [Quasimodo leaves, downcast]

Hugo

Oh, look. A mime. [Hugo prepares to spit on the mime, Victor stops him and Hugo swallows]

Solder
[Esmeralda opens the church door to see soldiers outside.]

Frollo's orders: Post a guard at every door.

Esmeralda
[Esmeralda slams the door in anger.]

Don't worry, Djali. If Frollo thinks he can keep us here, he's wrong.

Archdeacon

Don't act rashly, my child. You created...quite a stir at the festival. It would be unwise to arouse Frollo's anger further.

Esmeralda

You saw what he did out there; letting the crowd torture that poor boy. I thought if just one person could stand up to him, then-- [sighs] What do they have against people who are different, anyway?

Archdeacon

You can't right all of the wrongs of this world by yourself.

Esmeralda

Well, no one out there is going to help me. That's for sure.

Archdeacon

Well, perhaps there's someone in here who can.

Parishioner
[Esmeralda finishes singing "God Help the Outcasts" in the center of the light from the window, Quasimodo smiles as he is unexpectedly spotted by a parishioner mistakenly thinking he's going to cause trouble.]

You! Bell Ringer! What are you doing down here? [Quasimodo is startled by the parishioner and accidentally knocking down a candle-staff, Esmeralda and Djali see this and they gasp in shock at the parishioner's actions] Haven't you caused enough trouble already?

Esmeralda
[Quasimodo retreats back to the bell tower with Esmeralda and Djali following him from behind, while the parishioner is scolded by the Archdeacon for making a scene offscreen.]

Wait! I want to talk to you.

Laverne
[Quasimodo comes out of the top of the staircase with Esmeralda and Djali behind him and the Gargoyles watch them from above.]

Look! He's got a friend with him.

Victor

Yeah, maybe today wasn't a total loss after all.

Hugo

The one in the dress ain't bad either. [Quasimodo reaches his room, where the gargoyles greet him] Quasi!

Victor

Congratulations!

Hugo

Got the girls chasing you already!

Quasimodo

Actually, I--

Victor

You mustn't run too fast, or she'll get away.

Quasimodo

I know, uh, that's what I...

Hugo

Just give her some slack, then reel her in! Then give her some slack, then reel her in! Then give her some slack--

Laverne
[Laverne hits him on the head]

Knock it off, Hugo! She's a girl, not a mackerel.

Esmeralda
[to Quasimodo]

And a Gypsy. And maybe Frollo's wrong about the both of us.

Hugo
[Unbeknownst to them, the gargoyles are eavesdropping.]

What did she say?

Laverne

Frollo's nose is long and wears a truss.

Hugo

Ha! Told ya! Pay up!

Victor

Oh, dear. [Gives Hugo a coin]

Hugo

Chump.

Hugo
[Quasimodo had just driven Phoebus out of the Cathedral.]

Hey-hey! There he is! [the gargoyles applaud and cheer Quasimodo]

Victor

É bellissimo! You ejected that tin-plated buffoon with great panache!

Hugo

The nerve of him! Snoopin' around here tryin' to steal your girl.

Quasimodo

My girl?

Laverne

Esmeralda. Dark hair, works with a goat. Remember?

Hugo

Boy, I do. Way to go, lover boy!

Quasimodo
[chuckles]

"Lover boy"? Oh, no, no.

Laverne

Oh, don't be so modest.

Quasimodo

Look, I appreciate what you're all trying to do. But let's not fool ourselves. "Ugliest face in all Paris," remember? I don't think I'm her type.

Laverne
[Paris is in flames while Frollo and the guards are searching for Esmeralda. In the bell tower, Victor and Laverne are upset, looking out.]

Oh, it doesn't look good.

Victor

It's hopeless. Absolutely hopeless.

Hugo
[playing cards with a pigeon, not paying attention]

You're telling me! I'm losing to a bird!

Laverne
[to Quasimodo]

We always said you were the cute one.

Hugo
[stuffing his mouth with cheese and bread]

I thought I was the cute one!

Laverne

No, you're the fat, stupid one with the big mouth!

Hugo
[looks confused, still with his mouth full]

What're you sayin', exactly?

Frollo
[To Esmeralda]

The time has come, gypsy. You stand upon the brink of the abyss. Yet even now, it is not too late. I can save you from the flames of this world, and the next. Choose me, or the fire.

Frollo
[Esmeralda spits in his face in refusal, causing the crowd to gasp]

The Gypsy, Esmeralda, has refused to recant. This evil witch has put the soul every citizen in Paris in awful jeopardy.

Hugo
[Quasimodo is chained up, and the gargoyles are trying to snap him out of his depression]

Come on, Quasi, snap out of it.

Victor

Your friends are down there.

Quasimodo

It's all my fault.

Laverne

Ya gotta break these chains!

Quasimodo

I can't. I tried. What difference would it make?

Victor

But you can't let Frollo win.

Quasimodo

He already has.

Hugo

So you're-- You're givin' up? That's it?

Laverne

These chains aren't what's holdin' you back, Quasimodo.

Quasimodo

Leave me alone.

Hugo
[All the gargoyles are shocked, and they slowly begin to stone-walk away]

Okay. Okay, Quasi. We'll leave ya alone.

Victor

After all, we're only made out of stone.

Laverne

We just thought maybe you were made of something stronger.

Frollo
[The gargoyles then turn to stone, leaving Quasimodo with the line "Made of something stronger."]

For justice, for Paris, and for her own salvation, it is my sacred duty to send this unholy demon back where she belongs!

Quasimodo
[He lights the pyre and the crowd yells in protest] [bellowing]

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Hugo
[last line, after closing credits end]

Good night, everybody! Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Quasimodo

Good morning!

Quasimodo
[The bird squeaks its approval.]

Will today be the day? Are you ready to fly?

Quasimodo
[The bird squeaks its disapproval.]

You sure? Good day to try. Why, if-if I picked a day to fly, oh, this would be it! The Festival of Fools! It will be fun--the jugglers, and music, and dancing...

Quasimodo
[The bird, who had been resting in Quasimodo's hand, has begun to flap its wings. Quasimodo slowly removes his hands until the bird is hovering in place. He chuckles and shows his hands to the bird, who finally realizes that it is flying. It squeaks an approval, then a question, as a flock of birds fly by.]

Go on! Nobody wants to be cooped up here forever!

Hugo
[The bird flies off to join the flock. As soon as it's gone, Hugo, and later, Victor, come to life. Hugo spits out the nest.]

Oh, man! I thought he'd never leave! I'll be spittin' feathers for a week!

Victor

Well, that's what you get for sleeping with your mouth open.

Hugo

Heh-heh, go scare a nun. Hey, Quasi, what's going on out there? A fight? A flogging?

Victor

A festival.

Hugo

You mean the Feast of Fools?

Quasimodo

Aha!

Hugo

Alright alright! Pour the wine and cut the cheese.

Victor

It is a treat to watch the colorful pageantry of the simple peasant folk.

Hugo

Boy, nothing like balcony seats for watching the old F.O.F.

Quasimodo

Yeah, watching. [leaves, downcast]

Hugo

Ah, look. A mime. [Hugo prepares to spit on the mime, Victor stops him and Hugo swallows his prize]

Hugo
[They proceed inside to Quasimodo. Laverne catches up to them.]

Hey, hey, hey! What gives?

Victor

Aren't you going to watch the festival with us?

Hugo

I don't get it.

Victor

Perhaps he's sick!

Laverne

Impossible. If 20 years of listening to you two hasn't made him sick by now, nothing will.

Victor

But watching the Festival of Fools has always been the highlight of the year for Quasimodo.

Laverne

What good is watchin' the party if you never get to go? Here, get away from me! [Birds have begun to roost on Laverne. She waves them away.] Go on, you bunch of buzzards! He's not made of stone, like us.

Laverne
[Laverne goes to Quasimodo, who is at his table with a model of the city and small toys painted like townspeople.]

Quasi, what's wrong? You wanna tell ol' Laverne all about it?

Quasimodo

I... I just don't feel like watching the festival, that's all.

Laverne

Well, did you ever think about going there instead?

Quasimodo

Sure, But I'd never fit in down there. I'm not... normal.

Laverne

Oh, Quasi, Quasi, Quasi. [She pauses as the birds have returned to perch on her again. - To birds] Do you mind? I would like to have a moment with the boy, if it's all right with you!

Hugo
[To Quasimodo]

Hey, quit beating around the bell tower. What do we gotta do? Paint you a fresco?

Victor

As your friends and guardians, we insist you attend the festival.

Quasimodo

Me?

Hugo
[Enter Hugo, with a figurine of a Pope, from Quasimodo's tabletop scene.]

No, the Pope. Of course, you!

Victor
[Victor shoves the Pope figurine in Quasimodo's mouth.]

It would be a veritable potpourri of educational experience.

Hugo
[Hugo pulls the figurine out of Quasimodo's mouth.]

Wine, women and song!

Victor

You can learn to identify various regional cheeses!

Hugo

Bobbing for snails!

Victor

And the indigenous folk music.

Hugo

Playin' dunk the monk!

Laverne

Quasi, take it from an old spectator. Life's not a spectator sport. If watchin' is all you're gonna do, then you're gonna watch your life go by without you.

Hugo

Yeah, you're human, with the flesh, and the hair, and the navel lint. We're just part of the architecture, right, Victor?

Victor

Yet, if you chip us, will we not flake? If you moisten us, do we not grow moss?

Laverne

Quasi, just grab a fresh tunic and a clean pair of hose and--

Quasimodo

Thanks for the encouragement. But you're all forgetting one big thing.

Gargoyles

What?

Quasimodo

My master, Frollo.

Gargoyles
[dejectedly]

Oh, yeah, right [etc.]

Victor

Well, when he says you're forbidden from ever leaving the bell tower, does he mean "ever ever?"

Quasimodo

Never ever! And he hates the Feast of Fools! He'd be furious if I asked to go.

Hugo

Who says you gotta ask?

Quasimodo

Oh, no.

Hugo

Ya sneak out...

Laverne

It's just one afternoon...

Quasimodo

I couldn't--

Hugo

...and ya sneak back in.

Laverne

He'll never know you were gone.

Quasimodo

I mean, if I got caught?

Victor

Better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.

Quasimodo

He might see me.

Hugo

You could wear a disguise. Just this once. What Frollo doesn't know, can't hurt you!

Victor

Ignorance is bliss.

Hugo
[aside]

Look who's talking...

Laverne

Nobody wants to stay cooped up here forever.

Quasimodo
[Quasimodo thinks for a moment, then a smile creeps across his face.]

You're right! I'll go! [The gargoyles cheer.] I'll get cleaned up. [Another cheer] I'll stroll down those stairs. [Another cheer] I'll march through the doors and--
[Quasimodo and the gargoyles have been advancing on the door leading downstairs.]

Hugo
[Quasimodo returns to his room and the gargoyles.]

Hey-hey! There he is! [the gargoyles applaud and cheer Quasimodo]

Victor

Oh, wonderful! Bravo, bravissimo! You ejected that tin-plated buffoon with great panache!

Hugo

The nerve of him! Snooping around here trying to steal your girl.

Quasimodo

My girl?

Laverne

Esmeralda. Dark hair, works with a goat. Remember?

Hugo

Boy, I do. Way to go, lover boy!

Quasimodo
[chuckles]

Lover boy? Oh, no, no.

Laverne

Oh, don't be so modest.

Quasimodo

Look, I appreciate what you're all trying to do. But let's not fool ourselves. Ugliest face in all Paris, remember? I don't think I'm her type. [The gargoyles slowly melt into the background as Quasimodo begins to sing, Heaven's Light.] SO MANY TIMES OUT THERE
I'VE WATCHED A HAPPY PAIR
OF LOVERS WALKING IN THE NIGHT.
THEY HAD A KIND OF GLOW AROUND THEM
IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE HEAVEN'S LIGHT.
I KNEW I'D NEVER KNOW
THAT WARM AND LOVING GLOW
THOUGH I MIGHT WISH WITH ALL MY MIGHT
NO FACE AS HIDEOUS AS MY FACE
WAS EVER MEANT FOR HEAVEN'S LIGHT
BUT SUDDENLY AN ANGEL HAS SMILED AT ME
AND KISSED MY CHEEK WITHOUT A TRACE OF FRIGHT
I DARE TO DREAM THAT SHE
MIGHT EVEN CARE FOR ME
AND AS I RING THESE BELLS TONIGHT
MY COLD DARK TOWER SEEMS SO BRIGHT
I SWEAR IT MUST BE HEAVEN'S LIGHT!

Judge Claude Frollo
[As Quasimodo rings the bells, we see a group of monks in the ground level of the cathedral. We fly over Paris toward the Palace of Justice. As we do, we can see isolated lights going out occasionally. We eventually end up in the firelit bedchamber of Judge Claude Frollo.] [The background as Judge Claude Frollo begins to sing, Hellfire.]

BEATA MARIA
YOU KNOW I AM A RIGHTEOUS MAN
OF MY VIRTUE, I AM JUSTLY PROUD
BEATA MARIA
YOU KNOW I'M SO MUCH PURER THAN
THE COMMON, VULGAR, WEAK, LICENTIOUS CROWD
THEN TELL ME, MARIA,
WHY I SEE HER DANCING THERE,
WHY HER SMOLDERING EYES STILL SCORCH MY SOUL
I FEEL HER, I SEE HER
THE SUN CAUGHT IN HER RAVEN HAIR
IS BLAZING IN ME OUT OF ALL CONTROL!
[As Judge Claude Frollo sings, the flames in the fireplace take the form of a dancing Esmeralda, dancing for Judge Claude Frollo's pleasure.] LIKE FIRE, HELLFIRE
THIS FIRE IN MY SKIN
THIS BURNING DESIRE
IS TURNING ME TO SIN!
[The walls of the room and the flames suddenly become a row of judges, all dressed in red robes. Judge Claude Frollo is terrified.] IT'S NOT MY FAULT!
I'M NOT TO BLAME!
IT IS THE GYPSY GIRL
THE WITCH WHO SENT THIS FLAME
IT'S NOT MY FAULT
IF, IN GOD'S PLAN,
HE MADE THE DEVIL SO MUCH STRONGER THAN A MAN!
PROTECT ME, MARIA!
DON'T LET THIS SIREN CAST HER SPELL
DON'T LET HER FIRE SEAR MY FLESH AND BONE
DESTROY ESMERALDA
AND LET HER TASTE THE FIRES OF HELL
OR ELSE LET HER BE MINE AND MINE ALONE!

Brutish Guard
[The room returns to normal as a guard pounds on the door, then enters.]

Minister Frollo, the gypsy has escaped.

Judge Claude Frollo

What!?!

Brutish Guard

She's nowhere in the cathedral. She's gone.

Judge Claude Frollo

But how? I... never mind. Get out, you idiot! I'll find her. I'll find her if I have to burn down all of paris! [sings] HELLFIRE, DARK FIRE
NOW GYPSY IT'S YOUR TURN!
CHOOSE ME OR YOUR PYRE
BE MINE, OR YOU WILL BURN!
GOD HAVE MERCY ON HER
GOD HAVE MERCY ON ME
BUT SHE WILL BE MINE, OR SHE WILL BURN!

Hugo
[Bonus post-credits scene at the railing of the Notre Dame Cathedral, when Hugo the Gargoyle waves and breaks the fourth wall, directly to the audience]

Good night, everybody! Wah-ha-hoo!
