No, I have to get back before she does. [realizes what she said]
What did you say? [Peyton eats her dessert] You said "you have to get back before she does"? Isn't your Mom picking you up?
Well, um...
Peyton?
I was planning to tell you, Joe. I really was. Actually, you're gonna love it. It's just L-O-L...
Quit stalling.
I was supposed to be studying at a special ballet program this summer, but instead, I snuck away to come meet you.
You ran away? You ran away?! Is your mom even in Africa?
About that?
What have you done?!
I'm sure there's a reasonable...
The press is gonna eat me alive. What a stupid, stupid, stupid thing for you to do. Did you stop to think about how this was gonna impact me? [Peyton starts to cough out of nut allergies] Oh, that's not gonna work this time. You are in serious trouble.
[examines Peyton as she coughs]
OK, she's sweating like crazy, she's coughing, and her lips are swelling.
Oh, come on. Don't fall for that. She's a little world-class performer.
I don't think she's acting right now, OK? Give me 1 second. [to Peyton] Are you allergic to something?
Nuts.
[to Joe, showing him Peyton's dessert]
Did you know that? [Joe remembers her saying that and turns worried] The dessert has nuts. Take her to the hospital. Come on.
Ninth and Woodrow. I'll get the car. [Joe runs off] Hey, where are you going? What are you doing?
[offscreen]
Excuse me, sir.
[Joe runs across a bridge, through a traffic jam, then reaches the hospital with Peyton]
Help, help! My daughter needs help! Help!
[approaching Joe, alongside his friends]
What do we got here?
Help. She's allergic. She can't breathe. She's allergic to nuts.
[One of the doctors takes Peyton, and sets her on a gurney]
It looks like an anaphylactic reaction. Set her down.
She can't breathe.
Baby. Baby, open up your mouth. [uses a flashlight to look inside Peyton's mouth] The airway is almost close. Let's move her. 10 liters non-rebreather mask.
[offscreen; barking orders]
[offscreen; gasping]
I'll show you to the family waiting room. It's going to be fine. They're going to take care of her. She'll be OK.
[Later, Joe, Monique, Webber and other adults sit in the family waiting room] [entering with a clipboard]
Peyton Kelly's father?
Your daughter is responding well to the treatment. We're gonna keep her overnight just to be sure, but she's gonna be fine.
You were really, really lucky this time.
She's going to be alright.
Yeah.
OK.
Please tell me Peyton's alright.
She's going to be…
[Joe turns to find Karen, a woman, glaring at him as she enters]
She's going to be fine. The doctor says that she's going to be fine.
[angry, to Joe]
You're lucky that I haven't called the police.
Karen?
I got home early, and I see you and Peyton. [shows Joe a magazine] Your faces are plastered on the front of every magazine. [approaches Joe] I called Peyton 100 times yesterday, but she didn't answer. I flew out here, got off the plane, and I see all of this on the news.
Karen?
Is that all you can say for yourself is "Karen"?
I thought you were dead.
I can assure you, I'm not dead. How did you find her?
I didn't, she found me. Wait a minute. Is Peyton's mom still in Africa?
[as her eyes widen]
She didn't tell you, did she? [short pause] Joe… [stops talking for a second, then continues] Sara died in a car accident 6 months ago.
