[while having lunch at the Barking Crab] [to Peyton]
Can't you just go home after the game?
Peyton No, I have to get back before she does. [realizes what she said]
What did you say? [Peyton eats her dessert] You said "you have to get back before she does"? Isn't your Mom picking you up?
Peyton Well, um...
Peyton I was planning to tell you, Joe. I really was. Actually, you're gonna love it. It's just L-O-L...
Peyton I was supposed to be studying at a special ballet program this summer, but instead, I snuck away to come meet you.
You ran away? You ran away?! Is your mom even in Africa?
Peyton About that?
I'm sure there's a reasonable...
The press is gonna eat me alive. What a stupid, stupid, stupid thing for you to do. Did you stop to think about how this was gonna impact me? [Peyton starts to cough out of nut allergies] Oh, that's not gonna work this time. You are in serious trouble.
[examines Peyton as she coughs]
OK, she's sweating like crazy, she's coughing, and her lips are swelling.
Oh, come on. Don't fall for that. She's a little world-class performer.
I don't think she's acting right now, OK? Give me 1 second. [to Peyton] Are you allergic to something?
Peyton Nuts.
[to Joe, showing him Peyton's dessert]
Did you know that? [Joe remembers her saying that and turns worried] The dessert has nuts. Take her to the hospital. Come on.
[Joe lifts Peyton onto his shoulder, carrying her]
Hospital. Where's the nearest hospital?
Ninth and Woodrow. I'll get the car. [Joe runs off] Hey, where are you going? What are you doing?
[pushing bystanders out of his way]
Move! Move! Move! Move!
M Man
[offscreen]
Excuse me, sir.
[Joe runs across a bridge, through a traffic jam, then reaches the hospital with Peyton]
Help, help! My daughter needs help! Help!
ER Emergency Room Doctor
[approaching Joe, alongside his friends]
What do we got here?
Help. She's allergic. She can't breathe. She's allergic to nuts.
ER Emergency Room Doctor
[One of the doctors takes Peyton, and sets her on a gurney]
It looks like an anaphylactic reaction. Set her down.
ER Emergency Room Doctor
Baby. Baby, open up your mouth. [uses a flashlight to look inside Peyton's mouth] The airway is almost close. Let's move her. 10 liters non-rebreather mask.
[As the other doctors wheel Peyton away, Dr. Converse holds Joe back]
Peyton. Peyton. Peyton.
OD Other Doctors
[offscreen; barking orders]
Peyton [offscreen; gasping]
C Dr. Converse
I'll show you to the family waiting room. It's going to be fine. They're going to take care of her. She'll be OK.
C Dr. Converse
[Later, Joe, Monique, Webber and other adults sit in the family waiting room] [entering with a clipboard]
Peyton Kelly's father?
[The adults stand up] [approaching Dr. Converse]
I'm Peyton's dad.
C Dr. Converse
Your daughter is responding well to the treatment. We're gonna keep her overnight just to be sure, but she's gonna be fine.
[sighing with relief]
Thank you so much. Thank you.
C Dr. Converse
You were really, really lucky this time.
Webber She's going to be alright.
Webber OK.
W Woman
Please tell me Peyton's alright.
[Joe turns to find Karen, a woman, glaring at him as she enters]
She's going to be fine. The doctor says that she's going to be fine.
Karen [angry, to Joe]
You're lucky that I haven't called the police.
Karen I got home early, and I see you and Peyton. [shows Joe a magazine] Your faces are plastered on the front of every magazine. [approaches Joe] I called Peyton 100 times yesterday, but she didn't answer. I flew out here, got off the plane, and I see all of this on the news.
Karen Is that all you can say for yourself is "Karen"?
Karen I can assure you, I'm not dead. How did you find her?
I didn't, she found me. Wait a minute. Is Peyton's mom still in Africa?
Karen [as her eyes widen]
She didn't tell you, did she? [short pause] Joe… [stops talking for a second, then continues] Sara died in a car accident 6 months ago.
[Joe looks heartbroken about what happened to his ex-wife]
Oh, Peyton.
Stella OK, Joe, this is it. "I'm going to Fanny's Burgers."
EN ESPN News Reporter
Joe, you've just won the championship. What are you gonna do now?
[Joe chuckles as he lifts Peyton on his shoulder]
I'm gonna take my daughter home.
Peyton [Monique and her students cheer. Spike spins and stands on his hind legs in celebration. Watching Joe and Peyton, Stella looks on with defeat]
Daddy, you won the championship!
Aw, Peyton, I won much more than that.
