[Paul and Jessica meet with the Reverend Mother alone as she visits the Atreides estate]
Reverend Mother Mohiam: [to Jessica] Defiance in the eyes, like his father. Leave us.
Jessica Atreides
[whispers to Paul]
You must obey the Reverend Mother, whatever she tells you.
Paul Atreides
[Jessica leaves the room. Incensed, Paul turns to the Reverend Mother]
You dismiss my mother in her own house?
Reverend Mother Mohiam
[using the Voice]
Come here. Kneel.
Paul Atreides
[Paul instantly goes before the Reverend Mother and kneels]
How dare you use the Voice on me?
Reverend Mother Mohiam
[The Reverend Mother reveals a small, black rectangular box, with an opening on one side]
Put your right hand in the box. [Paul doesn't move] Your mother bade you obey me. [Paul puts his right hand in the box; the Reverend Mother instantly raises a needle and aims it at Paul's neck] I hold at your neck the Gom-Jabbar. The poison needle. Instant death. The test is simple. Remove your hand from the box, and you die.
Paul Atreides
What's in the box?
Reverend Mother Mohiam
Pain.
