[Paul and Jessica meet with the Reverend Mother alone as she visits the Atreides estate]
Reverend Mother Mohiam: [to Jessica] Defiance in the eyes, like his father. Leave us.
Jessica Atreides: [whispers to Paul] You must obey the Reverend Mother, whatever she tells you.
[Jessica leaves the room. Incensed, Paul turns to the Reverend Mother]
Paul Atreides: You dismiss my mother in her own house?
Reverend Mother Mohiam: [using the Voice] Come here. Kneel.
[Paul instantly goes before the Reverend Mother and kneels]
Paul Atreides: How dare you use the Voice on me?
[The Reverend Mother reveals a small, black rectangular box, with an opening on one side]
Reverend Mother Mohiam: Put your right hand in the box. [Paul doesn't move] Your mother bade you obey me. [Paul puts his right hand in the box; the Reverend Mother instantly raises a needle and aims it at Paul's neck] I hold at your neck the Gom-Jabbar. The poison needle. Instant death. The test is simple. Remove your hand from the box, and you die.
Paul Atreides: What's in the box?
Reverend Mother Mohiam: Pain.

Reverend Mother Mohiam: You’ve proven you can rule yourself. Now you must learn to rule others. It’s something none of your ancestors learned.
Paul Atreides: My father rules an entire planet.
Reverend Mother Mohiam: He’s losing it.
Paul: He’s getting a richer one.
Reverend Mother Mohiam: He’ll lose that one, too.

Reverend Mother Mohiam: Like sifting sand through a screen, we sift people. If you had been unable to control your impulses like an animal, we could not let you live. You inherit too much power.
Paul Atreides: What, because I'm a duke's son?
Reverend Mother Mohiam: Because you are Jessica's son. You have more than one birthright, boy.
