Cindy-Lou Who
You alright, Mom?
Donna
Me? Oh, yes. Never better. Ah. What did you put down here anyway, a roller skate?
Cindy-Lou
No. Just better. Mrs. Wilbur and I made cookies.
Donna
Ah, that explains it. Come have some eggs.
Cindy-Lou
I can't. I gotta go mail something. But I made the beds and put away the twins' toys.
Donna
Thanks, sweetheart. You didn't have to do that.
Cindy-Lou
I don't mind.
Cindy-Lou
[thinking the Grinch is actually Santa]
Wow. I can't believe it's really you.
Grinch
Uh... yeah.
Cindy-Lou
I'm so sorry about the trap and everything, but I really need-- [sees the tree shoved halfway into the chimney] Hey! Why are you taking our Christmas tree?
Grinch
[does a spit-take in shock, worried that his cover is about to be blown]
Well, uh, one of the lights wasn't working, so I thought I'd take it back to the workshop and see if I could fix it.
Cindy-Lou
I didn't know you did that.
Grinch
[chuckles]
Yeah. Sure. Now, why don't you go back upstairs to bed, and then when you wake up, the tree will be fixed, and your presents will be waiting under it.
Cindy-Lou
Wait. You don't understand. I don't want presents.
Grinch
Of course you do. Everyone wants presents.
Cindy-Lou
No, no, really, I don't. I want you to help my mom.
Grinch
[flabbergasted]
Y-Your mom?
Cindy-Lou
Yeah. She works so hard and is always doing stuff for other people. And I just want her to be happy.
Grinch
You want me to help your mom?
Cindy-Lou
You're Santa. You make people happy. And everyone should be happy, right?
Grinch
Y-Yeah, I... I guess they should. [looks sad]
Cindy-Lou
[concerned]
Santa, are... are you okay?
Grinch
What? Uh... yeah. I'm fine. [chuckles] Now, why don't you go back up to bed, hmm?
Cindy-Lou
Okay. [they both walk upstairs] I wish you could celebrate with us tomorrow. We all get together and sing. It's so beautiful that if you close your eyes and listen, all of your sadness just goes away.
Donna
Wait, where are you going, again?
Cindy-Lou
I told you, to mail a letter.
Donna
OK, but just come here first and get your breakfast.
Cindy-Lou
Mom, I gotta go.
Cindy-Lou
[Donna gives Cindy-Lou a silly look with her hand on her waist]
Alright...
Donna
[Donna gives her a kiss on her cheek]
Okay. Now you can go.
Grinch
[mourning by his organ]
Why... for 53 years, I've put up with it... now. I must stop this Christmas from coming. But how?
Narrator
Then he got an idea. An awful idea. The Grinch got a wonderful, awful idea.
Grinch
[smiling evilly]
I know just what to do. I'm going to steal their Christmas! [lightning strikes] ALL the trimmings, ALL the trappings, ALL their gifts and garlands! When they wake up and see it's gone, then all their joy and happiness will be gone as well! So, prepare yourself, Max! For tomorrow, WE BEGIN! [echoes as lightning strikes again]
Grinch
[picks up a pickle jar and pulls a pickle out of the lid, and spits it out]
What's this?
WL Who Lady
Excuse me, are you getting that? I need it for my Christmas stuffing.
Grinch
Mmm... no.
WL Who Lady
Well, that's not very nice! [Grinch drops it on the floor, and it shatters, she stamps her foot] Oh, sugarplums!
Grinch
Today was great! We did mean things and we did them in style.
Grinch
[Max stands by the side of the bed and whines with a pleading face]
Max, you know the rules. You sleep in your bed, and I sleep in--
Grinch
[Fred the reindeer gives him the same look]
Oh, no, no, not you, too. I don't believe this. Max, did you teach him puppy eyes? [more whining; he sighs and gives in] Fine. This one time.
Grinch
Well, everyone, I just wanted to say that I've spend my entire life hating Christmas and everything about it, but then I see it wasn't Christmas I hated. It was being alone. but I'm not alone anymore. And I have all of you to thank for it, especially this little girl right here. Ma'am, your daughter's kindness changed my life.
Donna
That's my little girl.
B Bricklebaum
Oh, that was beautiful! That's my best friend.
Cindy-Lou
Merry Christmas, Mr. Grinch.
Grinch
Merry Christmas, Cindy-Lou.
Narrator
And the Grinch raised his glass and led the Whos in a toast.
Grinch
[gratefully raises his glass]
To kindness and love, the things we need most.
Grinch
[Cindy-Lou accidentally runs over the Grinch with her inner tube]
ARRGH!! What is wrong with you?! Didn't you see me? I mean, if that was a sled, I-I, well I'd be dead! [takes the tube off his torso]
Cindy-Lou
I'm sorry for bumping into you, but this is really important. Have you seen my letter?
Grinch
[groans]
And that right there, Max, is the true nature of the Who child. Just right to, "Me, me, me. My letter. Me, me, me."
Cindy-Lou
No! You don't understand. This isn't just a letter. This is the letter.
Grinch
[sarcastically; turns to face her]
Oh, really? Let me guess: small child, December 20th, rapidly searching for a REALLY IMPORTANT lost letter? Might it be your list of demands to Santa?
Cindy-Lou
They're not demands! It's more like a wish. And what I'm wishing for is really, really important.
Grinch
Well then, why send a letter? I mean, if it's really that important, you should just ask him face-to-face. [mockingly] Oh, but that's right! No one's ever seen him! My bad. [turns to leave] C'mon, Max. Let's get out of here.
Cindy-Lou
[Max looks at Cindy-Lou and follows the Grinch] [waves to Max]
Bye, doggy.
B Bob
[first lines; Illumination logo; Bob the Minion is holding a sparkler.]
I-Illumination!
S Snowball
[jumps in]
YEAH! ILLUMINATION! WOOOO!!
B Bob
[The big sparkler blows from the floor, while Snowball is laughing. But the sprinklers stops it, saving Bob.]
Huh?
B Bob
Aw. [speaks Minionese and gives Snowball his sparkler]
S Snowball
Hmm. Whoa.
[The film starts.]
Grinch
[the Grinch and Max head down to the workshop; the Grinch grabs a pointer]
And now, the question we have all been waiting for: How will I steal Christmas? Well, prepare to have your little doggy mind blown. Boop! [tilts the green blackboard] TA-DA! [chuckles] That's right! I become... Santa Claus! [Max grunts confusedly] But instead of giving all the joy and happiness, I'll take it away! If he can deliver Christmas to the whole world in one night, then I can certainly steal it from little old Whoville. I mean, come on. What's Santa has that I don't? [Max barks; frowns] That's hurtful.
K Kid
[The Grinch walks by a kid who is reaching the carrot to finish the snowman, then stops and picks a carrot off his hand]
Oh! Thanks, mister. [The Grinch puts the carrot on a snowman's face, but pushes the head off] Hey! [The Grinch drops the carrot in kid's hand and walks off with Max] You're a mean one, mister. [The Grinch throws the snowball at him, making him muffled scream.]
