The Creature

I longed to be part of this family. To be their benefactor. What could I possibly do for them? I became their invisible guardian. The Spirit of the Forest. And on occasion they too extended a small kindness toward me. Clothes. Bread. And for a moment, a brief, brief moment, the world and I were at peace.

The Creature

An idea, a feeling became clear to me. The hunter did not hate the wolf. The wolf did not hate the sheep. But violence felt inevitable between them. Perhaps, I thought, this was the way of the world. It would hunt you and kill you, just for being what you are.

The Creature

I understood that I was nothing. A wretch. A blot. Not even of the same nature as Man. This hurt clung to my mind. It never let go.

The Creature

There was silence again. Then, merciless life. How long did I die for? I do not know. But I saw my injuries healed. The cold winter air stung in my lungs. I felt lonelier than ever, because for every man there was but one remedy to all pain: Death, a gift you too had denied me.

The Creature

I cannot die. And I cannot live... alone.

The Creature

Whatever puzzle I am, Creator, I think. I feel. I have this sole petition: make one like me.

The Creature

The miracle was not that I should speak, but that you would ever listen! If you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage. And mine is infinite!

The Creature

You gave me life unwanted. I give it back to you. You thought me a monster. Now I return the favor.

The Creature

Victor. You only listen when I hurt you! [picks up a stick of dynamite] This. You put your faith in this. You think this will unmake me. Light it then, and hope it does. But if it does not, I will come for you again. Light it! [Victor lights the dynamite.] Now...run.

The Creature

I found what I am. What I'm made from. I am the child of a charnel house. A wreckage, assembled from refuse and discarded dead. A monster.

Blind Man

I know what you are. A good man. And you are my friend.

The Creature

I need you to make me a companion.

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

A..a companion? Oh. I see. Another monster.

The Creature

Yes. We can be monsters together.

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

In you, I have created something truly horrible.

The Creature

Not something. Someone.

The Creature

Make one like me.

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

And then what? Procreation. Reproduction. Mm... A home? A grave? Death begetting death begetting death. A race of devils propagated upon the earth. Obscenity perpetuating itself.

The Creature

I am obscene to you, but to myself I simply am.

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

BEGONE! Never again will I make something like you, wicked and deformed.

The Creature

Then it is still all about your will, Victor? That horrible, horrible will that birthed me, condemns me now? ::grabs Victor:: The miracle is not that I should speak, but that you would ever LISTEN! ::throws Victor across the room:: If you are not to award me love, then I shall indulge in rage. And mine is infinite!

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

I am sorry. Regret consumes me. And I now regard my life for what it was.

The Creature

You will go now, creator. Fade away. It will all be but a brief moment. My birth. My grief. Your loss. I will not be punished, nor absolved. What hope I had, what rage... It is all nothing. The tide that brought me here now comes to take you away. Leaving me stranded.

Dr. Victor Frankenstein

Forgive me. My son. And if you have it in your heart, forgive yourself into existence. If death is not to be, then consider this, my son. While you are alive, what recourse do you have but to live? Live. Say my name. My father gave me that name, and it meant nothing. Now I ask you to give it back to me... one last time. The way you said it at the beginning. When it meant the world to you.

The Creature

Victor. I forgive you. Rest now, Father. Perhaps now, we can both be human.
