View Quote The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is...where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there...in peace. War will make corpses of us all.
View Quote The Ring of Power within my grasp. A chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor, to show his quality.
View Quote My precious. Note: ranked #85 in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie quotations in American cinema.
View Quote [eating dead rabbits] Look! Look. See what Sm?agol finds? They are young, they are tender, they are fresh! Yes they are! Eat them, eat them!
View Quote Frodo: What food have we got?
Sam: Let me see. Ah, yes. Lembas bread. And look! More lembas bread. I don't usually hold with foreign foods, but this Elvish stuff, it's not bad.
Frodo: Nothing ever dampens your spirits, does it, Sam?
Sam: [looks up] Those rain clouds might.
View Quote Sam: Every Orc in Mordor's gonna hear this racket! Let's just tie him up and leave him!
Smeagol: No! That would kill us! Kill us!
Sam: It's no more than you deserve!
Frodo: Maybe he does deserve to die, but now that I see him... I do pity him.
View Quote Pippin: Merry? Merry!
Uruk-hai Captain: What is it? What do you smell?
Uruk-hai Sniffer: Man-flesh.
Pippin: Aragorn.
Uruk-hai Captain: They've picked up our trail... let's move!
View Quote Aragorn: Legolas! What do your Elf-eyes see?
Legolas: The Uruks turn northeast... They are taking the Hobbits to Isengard!
Aragorn: ...Saruman.
Geographically, Legolas should have said northwest.
View Quote Saruman: The horsemen took your lands. They drove your people into the hills, to scratch a living of rocks!
Wildman Chieftain: Murderers! [the wildmen yell]
Saruman: Take back the lands they stole from you. Burn every village! [shows the wildmen and Uruk-hai attacking a Rohan village.] [voiceover] It will begin with Rohan. Too long have these peasants stood against you. But no more.
View Quote Legolas: Come, Gimli!
Gimli: [Panting heavily] I'm wasted on cross-country! We dwarves are natural sprinters! Very dangerous over short distances!
View Quote Éomer: What business does an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark? Speak quickly!
Gimli: Give me your name, horsemaster, and I shall give you mine.
Éomer: I would cut off your head, dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground.
Legolas: [taking out bow] You would die before your stroke fell! [The riders raise their spears, until Aragorn pushes Legolas' bow aside]
Aragorn: I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn. This is Gimli, son of Gloin, and Legolas, of the woodland realm. We are friends of Rohan, and of Theoden, your king.
Éomer: Theoden no longer recognises friend from foe. Not even his own kin. [Removes his helmet]. Saruman has poisoned the mind of the king and claimed lordship over these lands. My company and I are those loyal to Rohan, and for that, we are banished. The White wizard is cunning, they say. He walks here and there, like an old man, hooded and cloaked. And everywhere his spies slip passed our nets.
Aragorn: We are no spies. We track a party of Uruk-hai westwards across the plain. The've taken two of our friends captive.
Éomer: The Uruks are destroyed. We slaughtered them during the night.
Gimli: But there were two hobbits. Did you see two hobbits with them?
Aragorn: They would be small, only children to your eyes.
Éomer: We left none alive. We piled the carcasses and burned them. [gestures to the smoke coming over the hill]
Gimli: They're dead?
Éomer: [nods] I am sorry. [Éomer pauses, then whistles] Hasufel! Arod! [two horses trot over] May these horses bear you to better fortune than their former masters. [Mounts his horse and dons his helmet] Look for your friends. But do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands. [To his riders] We ride north!
View Quote Pippin: It's talking to us, Merry. The tree is talking!
Treebeard: Tree? I am no tree! I am an Ent.
Merry: [fascinated] A tree-herder. A shepherd of the forest!
Pippin: Don't talk to it, Merry. Don't encourage it!
Treebeard: Treebeard, some call me.
Pippin: And... whose side are you on?
Treebeard: Side? I am on nobody's side, because nobody is on my side, little Orc. No one cares for the woods anymore.
Merry: We're not Orcs. We're Hobbits!
Treebeard: "Hobbits"? Never heard of a Hobbit before. [getting angry] Sounds like Orc mischief to me! They come with fire! They come with axes! Gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning!! Destroyers and usurpers, CURSE THEM!!
Merry: You don't understand! We're Hobbits! Halflings! Shire-folk!
Treebeard: Maybe you are not... [calming] and maybe you are. The White Wizard will know.

View Quote Sam: There are dead things... dead faces in the water!
Gollum: All dead. All rotten. Elves, and Men, and Orcses. A great battle long ago... The Dead Marshes. Yes, yes, that is the name! This way. Don't follow the lights.
[Sam slips and almost ends up in the water]
Gollum: Careful now! Or hobbits go down to join the Dead Ones, and light little candles of their own.
[While they continue to walk, Frodo stops to look at one of the bodies. He looks down at a dead elf. The elf's eyes suddenly open, and Frodo falls face forward into the marshes. When he comes to, horrid looking ghosts are reaching for him. Gollum barely manages to pull him out.]
Frodo: ... Gollum?
Gollum: [more firmly] Don't follow the lights!
View Quote Gollum: So bright... So beautiful... Ah, Precious...
Frodo: What did you say?
Gollum: Master should be resting. Master needs to keep up his strength.
Frodo: [approaches him] Who are you?
Gollum: Mustn't ask us, not it's business. Gollum, gollum.
Frodo: Gandalf told me you were one of the River-folk.
Gollum: [muttering to himself] "Cold be heart and hand and bone. Cold be travelers far from home."
Frodo: He said your life was a sad story.
Gollum: "They do not see what lies ahead, when Sun has failed and Moon is dead."
Frodo: You were not so very different from a Hobbit once, were you... Smèagol?
Gollum: [looks up] ...What did you call me?
Frodo: That was your name once, wasn't it? A long time ago.
Gollum: My name? My name... Smèagol.
View Quote Saruman: [voiceover] Rohan, my lord, is ready to fall. [scene cuts to the fords of Isen, full of slain Rohirrim]
Éomer [quietly] Th?odred. [to others] Find the king's son! [the Rohirrim search the bodies]
Rohan soldier: Mordor will pay for this!
Éomer: These orcs are not from Mordor. [kicks over a slain orc, revealing the White hand on its helmet]
Rohan soldier: My Lord Éomer, over here!
Éomer: [hurries over to Th?odred's body] He is alive!
